Can Indian Shopify Stores Sell Through ChatGPT? What Is Live in 2026
Shopify's agentic storefronts list products in ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Meta. What is live, why buying is open to US shoppers only for now, and what an Indian brand should set up today.

Shopify turned on "agentic storefronts" this year, and much of what has been written about it suggests every store now sells inside ChatGPT. For an Indian brand selling to Indian customers, the accurate answer in November 2026 is: not yet. The groundwork is still worth doing now.
What agentic storefronts are
Shopify lists eligible products in Shopify Catalog, and AI assistants draw on that catalogue when someone asks them for product suggestions. Shopify's help centre names four channels: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta.
The feature is on by default for eligible stores. You manage it in the admin under Sales channels > Agentic, and you have to accept Shopify's Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms to use it.
Where the shopper pays
| Channel | Where the purchase happens |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Your own store's checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab |
| Microsoft Copilot | A Shopify-powered checkout inside Copilot, if direct checkout is on |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | A Shopify-powered checkout inside Google, for select US-based shops |
| Meta | A Shopify-powered checkout inside the channel, if direct checkout is on |
ChatGPT used to offer checkout inside the chat. OpenAI ended that Instant Checkout in March 2026, and ChatGPT now sends shoppers to the store to pay.
The India question
Shopify's own guide, last updated in June 2026, says: "purchasing across all channels is currently available to US buyers only." ChatGPT and Copilot are open to any store in Shopify Catalog that sells to US buyers, wherever the store is based. Google's channel is limited to select US-based shops.
In practice:
- If you sell only in India, shoppers can't buy from you through these channels yet. Shopify says stores "will be ready by default" when the AI partners expand to more regions, and gives no date.
- If you already ship to the US, ChatGPT and Copilot can send you US buyers today, as long as your products are eligible for the catalogue.
What to set up now
The AI channels read the product data your store already holds. The work is mostly cleaning that data, which also helps Google Shopping and your own site search:
- Titles that say what the product is. "Kumkumadi face oil, 30 ml" tells an assistant more than "Glow Elixir".
- Descriptions with the facts people ask about: size, material, ingredients, what's in the box and how to care for it.
- Variants set up as variants, not as separate products for each size or colour.
- Barcodes (GTIN) where you have them, and accurate stock.
- Published policies: refund and returns, shipping, terms of service and privacy.
- A look at the Agentic channel in your admin, to see which products are listed and which are flagged.
What to avoid
- Be careful with packages that promise ChatGPT placement. These listings come from your catalogue data, and Shopify says agentic storefronts carry no extra fees beyond standard payment rates.
- Don't rebuild the store for this. Everything the channels need is already in your catalogue.
If your catalogue needs restructuring, or you're planning to start selling to the US, our Shopify development team can help. The Shopify pricing guide covers what selling across borders costs on each plan.
