Add to Cart but No Orders on Shopify: How to Find the Leak
Shoppers add to cart and reach checkout, but almost nobody pays. How to read Shopify's funnel report and find the leak in an afternoon.

The pattern shows up on Shopify forums every week. Ads are getting clicks, people add products to the cart, a fair number reach checkout, and then almost nobody pays. Owners usually respond by changing the theme or the ads. Most of the time the cause is somewhere between the cart and the payment confirmation, and you can find it without redesigning anything.
Read the funnel before you change anything
Shopify's Conversion rate breakdown report shows four steps: all sessions, sessions with cart additions, sessions that reached checkout, and sessions that completed checkout. Look at where the drop is, because each step points to a different kind of problem.
| Where people drop | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Few cart additions | Product page, price or traffic quality. Not a checkout problem. |
| Cart additions, few reach checkout | Cart drawer, upsell pop-ups, shipping or COD surprises shown in the cart |
| Reach checkout, few complete | Shipping rates, payment methods, login walls, or a broken payment step |
The report has an open funnel and a closed funnel. The closed one counts only sessions that went through the steps in order, which is the one to use when you're hunting a leak.
One warning for anyone comparing months. Shopify changed how it measures sessions between 21 and 23 September 2026, and "sessions that reached checkout" now counts checkout loads, not only checkout interactions. If your reached-checkout rate jumped or your checkout conversion rate fell in late September, check that before you panic. We wrote up what changed in the sessions report.
The afternoon of checks
These find most checkout leaks. Do them on a mid-range Android phone on mobile data, because that's what most Indian shoppers use, and on an iPhone in Safari.
- Place a real order with every payment method. UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets and COD if you offer it. A gateway that fails silently on one method is the most common cause we see.
- Read your payment provider's dashboard. Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and the rest show failed and abandoned payment attempts. If attempts are high and successes are low, the shopper got to the payment step and it failed there.
- Try addresses outside your home state and in a few small-town pincodes. If a zone has no shipping rate, Shopify's checkout says no rates are available and the shopper can't continue.
- Look at the total in the cart and at the last step. Shipping, COD fees or tax that appear only at the end cause people to leave. Show them early or fold them into the price.
- Check whether checkout asks people to log in. Settings for customer accounts can make sign-in required. Every forced step loses buyers.
- Open the cart on a small screen. Cart drawers and sticky bars added by apps sometimes cover the checkout button on mobile Safari. It looks fine on a desktop.
- Go through Abandoned checkouts in your admin. Shopify keeps the contact details and cart for checkouts that weren't finished. A pattern, such as one product, one state or one device, points straight at the cause.
Apps are the usual suspects
When a store has fifteen or twenty apps, several of them inject scripts into the cart and product pages. Two apps editing the same cart, an old upsell app nobody uninstalled properly, or a script left in the theme after an app was removed can all break the path to checkout. Our app stack audit explains how we find them.
When it isn't a bug
Sometimes the checkout works and people still leave. Common reasons:
- the shipping cost or delivery date is worse than the shopper expected
- prepaid is pushed hard and COD is hidden, on a product people only buy with COD
- the store asks for a lot of trust (new brand, no reviews, no return policy in sight) right at the moment of payment
- the traffic is cheap and curious rather than ready to buy
None of these is fixed with code. They show up in the same checks, though, so you'll know which kind of problem you have.
Keep it from breaking again
Checkouts break after releases: a theme update, a new app, a changed shipping rule. A short automated test that places an order with each payment method after every change catches this before customers do. See automated checkout testing for Shopify.
If you'd rather have someone else do it, our Website & Commerce Audit (₹60,000, credited in full to a project signed within 60 days) traces the funnel, places real orders on real devices, and ranks what to fix. A Fix Sprint (₹1.5 L, 2 to 3 weeks) fixes it on the store you already have.
